Mico de Noche 7” Review

By Jeffery McNulty

This thing here is what’s known as a raging slab of vinyl. ‘3 Quarters’ kinda sneaks up on you with a slow fade and then throat-punches you into submission. The second song, ‘Quicky’ is a well named barn burner with a pounding syncopated back beat… and then, when you turn the baby shit brown swirled monstrosity over, holy hell that 3rd song is deadly heavy! Starting with a tickle of acoustic guitar, ‘Sacrifice’ settles in to a pummeling mid-tempo head bobber complete with killer drum fills. Side B gets my vote for best song on the single.

The record was recorded by Don Stewart himself and mixed by Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City) in SF. The drums have a tighter sound than I imagine them to have when I see Dave play live but it definitely helps them to cut through on the record. Guitars are raging loud, and Mike and Don’s vocals are as gnarly as you would expect, but you can still hear everything their bass player Chad is jamming. In short an awesome mix for an awesome band!

I have been a fan of these guys since day one but with their current line up I feel that they are keeping a style of music alive that I’ve always enjoyed since the days of Tad and Sleep Capsule here in Seattle or Helltrout down in Olympia. Some times I think they are the only true “G-word” band out there remaining and I DO NOT mean than as a diss (and yes, I realize I’ve dated myself ha ha!). What I’m trying to say is, keep up the good work dudes!

Mico De Noche is playing an awesome record release show coming up on Friday March 1st at Chop Suey. The line-up is intense with Mos Generator, Ancient Warlocks and Serial Hawk opening up. This is another show you will get tired of hearing about from you friends if you miss out. With the death of the Funhouse, Chop Suey is one of the few clubs with the chutzpa to help pick up the slack (along with Highline of course). I predict you will be spending a lot more time there in 2013.

[Editors Note: This is also the Serial Hawk tour kick-off show. Don’t miss this bill March 1st!]
