Back in 2011, YOB played the Showbox with The Sword, Black Cobra and Kyuss Lives! I had been standing in line for a beer when they started playing and a few minutes into their first song I was finally leaning over the back bar grabbing a cold one from iconic Showbox bartender and nicest guy on the planet Robert Jones. “Man!” I shouted to him over the teeth rattling roar, “These guys are on fire!” “WHAT?!” he said, cupping his hand to his ear. “F-I-R-E!” I screamed, leaning as far over the bar as I could to make sure he heard me, “They’re burning this place down!” And they were. It was so loud and so growlingly intense that I could smell the burning. Not figuratively. Literally. I smelled burning. I noticed that Robert was pointing to my hair, which out of the corner of my eye appeared to be radiating an orange glow. Apparently I had inadvertently draped it over top of a lit tea candle as I hollered to him and it was indeed on fire. Before I could panic he quickly grabbed a fistful of my smoldering locks and smothered out the flames. My hair stopped burning. YOB didn’t.

It’s been a little while now since my, uh, incident. Now that my hair’s grown back and I’ve learned to be conscious of my relative proximity to open flames: YOB’s back! On Friday, September 6th, the Chop Suey will host what is one of the most anticipated shows of the year for a hell of a lot of us metal heads. The melodically haunting two-piece of bass and drums known as Bell Witch will kick off the evening with their sludgy, creeping dirges. Then, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth, fresh from rocking the balls off of the entire City of Seattle at the Sub Pop Silver Jubilee (and Missoula’s balls at last month’s Total Fest) will show you why they’re one of the heaviest, most powerful and positive forces to arise from the Emerald City in recent years. Finally, the Eugene, Oregon DOOM metal trio of YOB will tune down and send up a plume of thick black smoke that will spark glowing embers of scorching sound into a full-blown inferno of doom. Just to be on the safe side, you should probably bring an extinguisher with you to this one because this bill of YOB, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth and Bell Witch may just set your fucking hair on fire.
