Stoner rock fans rejoice, Black Pussy’s new record Magic Mustache has arrived and it breathes fresh life into a genre that is in mortal danger of being played out. Shining brilliantly amidst a sea of lukewarm sludge rehashes, Black Pussy have created a record that captures everything that makes stoner/desert rock great. Unstoppable grooves, face shredding solos, more than a hint of tripped out psychedelia, all held together by superb songwriting. If Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss made up and combined forces, then ingested a sizable quantity of mushrooms and cannabis, the result might sound something like what Black Pussy have captured with Magic Mustache.
Like a mashup of retro science fiction and psychedelic sound effects, Magic Mustache starts off with droning noise ambience before suddenly hammering down with thick walls of guitars and pulsating bass. Produced with the great Adam Pike (Red Fang, Dog Shredder, Rabbits), Magic Mustache manages to capture the intense energy of the band and the overwhelming power generated by the wall of Sunn amps and cabs in the bands arsenal. Songs like “Into Your Cosmic” drive recklessly through vast desert highways on blazing hot guitars and hard hitting drums, while the off kilter rhythm and lead melody in “For The Sake of Argument” conjures the essence of Josh Homme like a peyote-fueled spirit walk. The title track closes the record with an epic jam rife with wailing, mind-melting solos.
Magic Mustache is a thoroughly solid record, simultaneously fun and energetic while having depth and harmony. It is perfect for burning a spliff and listening to intently with headphones, or just as well placed in the background of a beer soaked party. Magic Mustache is out now via Made In China Records on a variety of vinyl options, as well as CD and digital download. Fans of classic rock, stoner rock, desert rock, etc need this record.
