He Whose Ox is Gored, Serial Hawk, Deep Sea Thunder Beast, Sol
Black Lodge, Friday 9-19
By Brian Kim
Those who embrace bone rattling, ear-drum slaughtering heaviness would do well to find themselves at Black Lodge this Friday to bear witness to a truly epic lineup, as local doomgaze heroes He Whose Ox Is Gored will be laying waste to their home turf’s intimate muraled walls with their crushing and dynamic blend of sludgy doom and atmospheric post-metal. This is a band that’s been slowly building up a lot of steam for a long time, and is now poised upon the impending release of their debut full length, which if their recently released track “Cairo” is any indicator of, will be one of the most impressive and ambitious heavy records of recent memory. Catch them now and savor this moment before they blow up and then tell all your friends how cool you were.
Adding their colossal weight to the bill will be heavier than thou riff-slayers Serial Hawk, whose monolithic sound rivals those who set the standard for sludgy, doomy, stoner metal. Expect to be pummeled by huge riffs and drown in a sea of hot distortion.
Bringing even more heavy all the way from San Diego will be Deep Sea Thunder Beast, who smash together raw stoner rock psychedelia with doomy sludge metal, as well as Portland’s expansive post-doom outfit Sol, who summon a cinematic range of atmospheric ambience to powerfully brutal post-metal.
This is an incredibly solid lineup throughout, featuring some of the finest heavy bands along the west coast. Do not sit this one out.
