Post/Boredom- Ritualistic Time Abuser

Review by James Ballinger

Seattle’s Post/Boredom is in a very good place right now. Their three song EP Shaking Hands With Clients from last year showed a lot of promise of things to come, and it was a solid continuation of what the group was turning into.

Formed in 2015, essentially from the ashes of bassist Billy Hamilton and Pamela Sternin’s former band, Don Peyote, the 2018 EP was a snapshot of a band in the middle of a transformation, drilling down their influences, and figuring out what kind of band they wanted to be. All of that might sound slightly negative, but it’s not. It’s all part of watching a band form from the sidelines, full of people you respect, start something new and fresh from remnants. Their newest offering Ritualistic Time Abuser is a much more focused blast of a good/bad time. While there are clear influences here from some of the PNW’s finest you can pinpoint (Nirvana/Karp/Harkonen), one of the first noticeable things is how their song structures have more in common with early Killing Joke then Karp. That probably wasn’t intentional, but I couldn’t help but notice. Singer Rachel Lynch is in fine form here, as well, belting out lyrics that resemble David Yow fronting a hardcore band. It’s a quick 22 minute explosion of noise-rock enjoyment for your soul- fuck chicken soup. You can pick up one for yourself via Hex Records, or at the record release show this Saturday at Jupiter bar, with two new bands (Cat Toy and Community Service) playing their first shows.

Cat Toy features members from Sayonara, Android Hero and more, and their set reportedly is super short. I’ll bet a shot of Jameson on what member came up with that name. Community Service boasts members from Deadkill, Absolute Monarchs, Pink Parts, Nightmare Fortress among others, and their set is reportedly pretty short too. All this means you should show up to Jupiter tomorrow night for the quickest three band bill in town. It’s free, so you can use that extra money saved to buy a Post/Boredom LP, and maybe even a round of pinball for yours truly.
