Serial Hawk- Static Apnea

Review by Jeffery McNulty

Gorgeous and expansive are the first two words I’d use to describe Serial Hawk’s new record, Static Apnea. The Seattle trio used to be known for doing one thing incredibly well, namely their own brand of crushingly heavy doom. Sometimes ploddingly heavy with gigantic guitars like a diplodocus strolling from one tasty riff to the next… they had definitely mastered the art form. But with Static Apnea we are given something new.

I’ve never been quiet about how much I appreciate this band but they’ve stepped out of their comfort zone and into a new one. Whether it’s because of the new vibe after former drummer, Sean Bulkley joined the band, or a glimmer of the future, there’s obviously a vibe going on and I for one love it. They have since gathered a new drummer and guitarist for the live shows and upcoming tour,  Noise-A-Tron’s Jason Bledsoe and Pisswand’s Brock Bledsoe.

Static Apnea is full of epic moments, as I said, expansively monumental moments. And quiet moments, and some really cool modular synths (maybe?) on the track “Summon”. Will is branching out with his vocal styles as well and dude can sing! This record has everything I enjoy and there’s no shortage of hulking dinosaur riffage either. If anything they sound tougher. Check out the third song, “Depths and Passages” if you need proof. Obviously their amps and cabinets didn’t get any smaller. Have you seen this band live? It’s a literal wall of sound and fury.

Static Apnea is coming out just in time to put Serial Hawk on everyone’s top ten lists for the year. Do not sleep on this record!

Editor’s Note: You can stream the record and buy one here, and don’t miss the record release show this Saturday 8/31 at Substation with Witch Ripper, Heiress, and Holy Grove. More on that show tomorrow.
